New York Times Book Review
Art Director Matt Dorfman presented me with a challenge: to create a cover that says “The Year in Poetry” and includes a long list of names while somehow having a feel of “Poetry.” I had an idea to create an alphabet, drawn in 2 colours of ink, with water dropped on the letters while still wet to create an ephemeral image of each letter. I was thinking about rain; I was thinking about tears.
To allow for variation in letters I made several versions of each letter in both blue and pink. I then scanned them and chopped them up and then crated the names, and the bigger title, by placing the letters one by one into the document. Matt and I were both happy with the results.
